CALL FOR ARTISTS

ART ALLEY REFRESH 2023

Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) is a non-profit organization that strives to create a strong, vibrant, and welcoming downtown. We are currently working on updating our beautification project known as Art Alley, which took an underutilized alley/road (11th Street at Commerce) and transformed it into a place to showcase public art. This project included an outdoor gallery that gave local artists (this could be you!) the opportunity to create unique, inspiring artwork that ended up publicly displayed on the Bluffwalk.

The outdoor gallery, along with other components of Art Alley (see examples below), is scheduled to be refreshed this fall with the artwork of a new set of local artists ranging from high school students to professional creatives. Art pieces will be digitized, transferred into vinyl decals, installed on panels, and attached to the building located at 57 11th Street. Artists whose piece has been selected to be displayed downtown will receive an award package and honorarium of $400.

Judging Criteria

  • Content should spark joy in the viewer.

  • Artwork enhances the environment and has aesthetic quality - is dynamic and makes people stop and look.

  • Content is appropriate for all ages and respectful to all communities.

  • Content is not political, commercial, or religious.

  • Friday, August 11, 2023 – Submissions due

  • Week of August 14, 2023 – Art Selection Committee review

  • Week of August 21, 2023 – Artists will notified/contracts sent

  • Artwork will remain the property of the artist, however, each program participant must sign and return an Artist Contract.

  • Think big. The larger the original artwork, the better the definition when it is enlarged to fit the panel.

2023 LAUNCH LYH GRANT WINNERS

Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) is excited to announce the winners of our inaugural Launch LYH pitch competition. This unique program aims to boost economic growth and revive the heart of Lynchburg by supporting aspiring entrepreneurs who want to start, move, or expand their businesses in Downtown Lynchburg. We are thrilled to say that all seven of our winning businesses will open or expand within the next year, filling vacant storefronts and bringing new life to Downtown Lynchburg.

The selected applicants were given a comprehensive eight-week educational course, conducted by the Small Business Development Center - Lynchburg Region, which concluded with a thrilling pitch event. A panel of local business experts carefully chose the winners based on their innovative ideas, solid business models, and dedication to enhancing Lynchburg's business community. The winners received a total of $115,000 in grant funds, distributed according to their scores, business needs, and growth plans.

Super Rad! – ($25,000)

Super Rad! will be Lynchburg's exclusive arcade bar, and is set to transform the downtown nightlife by marrying classic and modern gaming. Housing an array of iconic retro games like Pac-Man, Galaga, and TMNT, Super Rad! will strive to resurrect the nostalgic arcade experience complemented by a creative menu intended to cater to the most imaginative culinary dreams. Its dynamic offering will encompass live music nights, exhilarating gaming tournaments, and an inclusive 'Free to Play' gaming arena, open to all. Super Rad will extend an invitation to every guest to partake in this unique blend of excitement and nostalgia, creating an environment where everyone could be the hero.

PREAM – ($25,000)

PREAM (Plants Rule Everything Around Me) is set to cater to indoor gardening needs by offering a variety of houseplants and necessary care accessories. Distinguishing itself from landscaping-focused nurseries, PREAM will prioritize the health and diversity of houseplants. This retail store will be dedicated to fostering community ties, understanding changing plant needs, and promoting plant education through classes, workshops, and events, creating an inclusive indoor gardening community.

Wolfbane Productions – ($25,000)

Wolfbane Productions, a beloved cultural cornerstone known for its innovative and immersive theatrical experiences, will soon expand its artistic reach to Downtown Lynchburg, Virginia. Since its inception in 2008, this award-winning theatre company has significantly contributed to the vibrancy of the arts scene in central Virginia, captivating audiences with its unique performances from its home base in Appomattox. The new location in Downtown Lynchburg is poised to amplify the company's mission to foster the arts community, inviting a broader audience to partake in their cutting-edge productions.

Mosaic Collective + Threaded – ($20,000)

Mosaic Collective and its sustainability-focused thrift store, Threaded, are set to relocate from 5th Street to a larger Main Street location. Both stores embody a commitment to social and environmental justice; Mosaic champions fair trade and empowers underprivileged communities, while Threaded encourages a circular economy, provides affordable goods, and raises awareness on the impact of fast fashion. By integrating community giveback initiatives and a 'Cash for Clothes' concept, they're transforming retail into a force for global sustainability and equity.

Easy Speak DANCE HALL & EVENTS –($20,000)

Easy Speak Dance Hall & Events, LLC, plans to offer an immersive dance experience, featuring a range of styles like ballroom, latin, and swing, coupled with lessons and live music events. Beyond dance, this venue will serve beverages, snacks, and pizzas, and host special dinner events, while also offering its space for private rentals and community gatherings, positioning itself as a versatile hub for the local community.

Each winner will also receive a Launch LYH Prize Package, which includes valuable resources from our partnering organizations, designed to further support their entrepreneurial journey.

HOSTING COMMUNITY EVENTS

Our second annual Fireworks on the Riverfront event was a smashing success. We saw large crowds (both residents and visitors) spend their evening in Downtown Lynchburg, enjoying live performers, food from local restaurants, and of course, the fireworks display. This event allowed families and friends to experience the spectacle from a variety of vantage points throughout the city. As with all of our events, this night was an important economic driver, generating foot traffic for our retail, restaurant, and arts & culture businesses in the district.

Movies in the Park has become a beloved summer tradition that brings in hundreds of visitors to Downtown Lynchburg. Last spring, after a series of polls on our social media channels, we landed on the top five most requested movies: In The Heights, Back to the Future, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tangled, and The Incredibles. And although two of our originally scheduled movie dates were rescheduled due to weather, we were fortunate to be able to show all five movies.

NEW PUBLIC ART INSTALLATIONS

The Creating Our Culture Mural came out of a desire to elevate Lynchburg's many artists of color, to provide exposure for their work, and to raise awareness for the wealth of talent we have in our community. A QR code is prominently displayed on the mural, which directs viewers to a webpage that features eight local artists of color, their work, and their stories.

The Midtown Parking Deck proved to be the perfect location to add vibrant murals as it served as a double initiative: to bring more awareness to an underutilized public parking garage and to add color and vibrancy to an unattractive structure. The Midtown Parking Deck Murals have enlivened the corner of Commerce and 10th Streets, and have helped hundreds to discover a previously overlooked public parking location for their downtown visits.

The City Auditorium Murals, executed by the wonderfully talented illustrator and cartoonist Stephen Kissel, add a fun and playful pop of color to the once-beautiful City Auditorium building that was condemned and negatively impacted the block.

PUBLISHING HILL CITY EATS

Hill City Eats: A Downtown Lynchburg Cookbook was published in November 2022 after months of preparation and coordination with downtown business owners and chefs. This book features 35 of our fantastic downtown restaurants, showcasing the places, the food, and the people behind them. It became a celebration of Downtown Lynchburg's renaissance, and of the food that has been central to that story. Hill City Eats is a symbol of progress, born out of a deep appreciation and love for our city.

PROMOTING & MARKETING DOWNTOWN

DLA uses a variety of tools to market and promote the many businesses, attractions, amenities, and events in Downtown Lynchburg. With creative blogs, engaging webpages, exciting videos, and informative newsletters, we highlight a downtown experience that entices the community to come and support our local businesses. Thanks to our community that engages with our content, we are able to continue providing helpful information that highlights the downtown experience.

Following a consistent trend in recent years, we welcomed a variety of new businesses to Downtown Lynchburg in 2022. The "Creating Our Culture" mural (located at 1225 Main Street) was completed on September 27, 2022. The goal of the mural is to promote, elevate, and raise awareness for Lynchburg’s artists of color. A QR code is prominently displayed on the mural, which directs viewers to a webpage that features eight local artists of color, their work, and their stories. The mural aims to provide BIPOC artists in our community the opportunity to express their voices through mass media and to connect them to potential partnerships and opportunities.

Local marketing firm Blackwater Branding, headquartered at 1009 Main Street, is responsible for the project concept and creative direction of the artwork as well as the featured website content. The mural was painted by Jawansa Hall of Blackwater Branding, along with local mural artists Christina Davis and Twon Smith.

In addition, this mural will help to bring color and vibrancy to a prominent, high-traffic area in downtown. This effort is part of DLA’s Placemaking Initiative, which aims to further our goal to make Downtown Lynchburg a more inviting and welcoming space for everyone.

This project is sponsored by Genworth Financial and Scott Insurance with additional support provided by The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation as well as support in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts— which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Jawansa hall

Mural Design and Co-owner of Blackwater Branding 

Jawansa Hall is a creative director and graphic designer from Lynchburg, Virginia. Holding a BFA in Fine Art & Graphic Design, Jawansa brings over 16 years of creative experience in design, branding, and marketing to every project. Having worked with some of Lynchburg’s top agencies, Jawansa later established his own creative firm known as Blackwater Branding.

Christina Davis

Mural execution 

Christina Davis is a self-taught painter and muralist from Lynchburg, Virginia.  Davis has completed multiple large-scale public murals and outdoor art pieces in her community, including  “Tales of the Garden,” a painting for DLA’s Art Alley in 2021. In addition to producing commissioned artwork, Davis also teaches painting classes and art camps, and contributes time/fundraising for training up younger artists.

Twon Smith

Mural execution 

Twon Smith comes from Lynchburg, Virginia with a degree in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. From graphite pencils to digital pexels, Twon has been illustrating and creating since age 6. Through his collegiate endeavors, new mediums and visual options emerged. Twon’s art and digital storyboards are expressive and lean towards concept art and figure studies of the human body or condition.

Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains boast a beautiful fall backdrop for the city of Lynchburg. And while spending an evening on the parkway is a must during these fall months, there is something special about this cozy season here in Downtown Lynchburg. Maybe it’s the views of the James River while the autumn-colored leaves begin to fall. Or it’s the eager anticipation of upcoming fall events (pumpkins, hayrides, cider… YAY). And it could be as simple as the crisp autumn air in your lungs when you step out onto the city streets. It’s corn! (A big lump with knobs?) We can’t imagine a more beautiful thing…than strolling through the market on a Saturday morning.

There is no shortage of fresh fall flavors available at the Lynchburg Community Market, and they are all from local or regional makers.  You’ll find pumpkins for decorating (or eating) and plenty of fresh produce for your seasonal dishes.

Take in the stunning array of fall colors on the Blackwater Creek Trail and Percival’s Island Trail.  If you’re more of a rider than a walker, just stop by Bikes Unlimited beforehand to rent a bike.

Tip: The peak time range for fall foliage in Virginia is supposedly sometime between October 10 and October 31, so mark your calendars now for a crisp fall outing during that time!

The Incredibles

Movie Screening: July 8th @ 8:30pm

The first stop for any action-packed day in Downtown Lynchburg has to be a coffee shop to fuel up!  Lucky for you, we have plenty to choose from, including:  The White Hart Café, Grains of Sense, Mission House Coffee, Marigold Cafe, 5th Street Grind or Nomad Coffee Company (located inside Gilded or at the movie event!).

Amazement Square is the perfect place for kids to flex their hero muscles by exploring the fascinating ‘Amazement Tower,’ an indoor play structure that spans all four floors of this interactive children’s learning museum. They even have a ‘League of Healthy Heroes’ exhibit to teach about healthy lifestyle choices.

You may not be as fast as Dash, but you can increase your speed by hopping on a bike at Bikes Unlimited.

To cool off from all that summer fun, you’ll find some icy treats inspired by one of the film’s most beloved characters, Frozone, at Rolled Cold Creamery on Main Street or Maylynn’s Creamery at the movie event.

Back to the Future

Movie Screening: July 22 @ 8:30pm

Hanging out in a historic downtown makes for easy time travel! Step back in time at one of our local antique shops, like Buzzard’s Roost, Enchanted, Estates & Consignments, Estates Revisited or Scarlet’s Main Street Antique Mall. Or, head over to RiverView Vinyl for some old school tunes.

It will take some time to develop Marty McFly’s sick guitar skills, but you can surely get started by checking out the impressive selection of instruments at L. Oppleman, America’s oldest pawn shop.

It may not be a DeLorean, but you can still cruise around McFly-style when you stop into Scene 3 Boardshop to get yourself a new skateboard.

Even though The Texas Inn opened way back in 1935, the restaurant today still gives all the vibes of a classic 1950s diner. This downtown establishment is tasty in any decade!

Tangled

Movie Screening: August 5 @ 8:15pm

For the best ‘Tangled’-inspired time in Downtown Lynchburg, we recommend starting your royal escapade by having afternoon tea at The Ploughcroft Tea Room on Commerce Street.

For nearly 25 years, Downtown Lynchburg Association has worked to sustain and develop downtown as a vital economic, cultural, recreational, residential, and historic center for our community.

Through marketing initiatives, public space improvements, business engagement programs, cultural events, and more, we have and will continue to contribute to the establishment of a strong and vibrant downtown district.

Project Outline

We are always working on new and exciting projects - cultural events, public art installations, business support efforts, and promotional activities for Downtown Lynchburg. This is where YOU come in. We have an exciting project in the works that will require a collective of creative individuals to help make this dream a reality. Without giving away too much (shh, it’s a surprise), we will need professional writers, graphic designers, photographers, and videographers to jump on board and use their skills this summer.

Our timeline for this project will span from June - September. REGAINING MOMENTUM POST-COVID

Downtown Lynchburg is back on track! After years of growth and redevelopment that was stunted in 2020, we saw the numbers begin to trend upward again last year in terms of visitation and tax revenue.

THE OPENING OF ART ALLEY

Art Alley officially opened to the public on October 1, 2021. Downtown was truly electric that night, and showed how public art and placemaking efforts can bring people together, create excitement, and provide an opportunity for the community to come Downtown to eat, shop, and explore.

Fireworks lit up the sky over Riverfront Park on July 2, 2021, and were visible from vantage points throughout the city. The event was a hit, and it also brought thousands of visitors to the district, where they ate, shopped, and explored throughout the evening.
